The Military History Museum Dresden

Today's Military Historical Museum of the Bundeswehr now looks back at a nearly 110-year chequered history of the army.

Designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind, the historic Arsenal building was extended with a new building, in the form of a transparent wedge which breaks the late-classical façade, an innovation that has already caused many discussions.
In contrast to the usual representation of military history, the museum is dedicated to the new concept of the causes and effects of war and violence. The focus is the human being with all his fears, hopes, passions, memories, instincts, his courage, his reason and aggression, for war is only understandable if viewed from the perspective of the nature of mankind.

The redesigned Military Historical Museum of the Bundeswehr takes its place on an architectural design and a content-level. The framework of the museum is the building from 2001. At its centre is the relationship between the military and society in Germany from the Middle Ages to today.

The museum not only shows governmental use of force, but also shows forms of societal violence and thus provides for a contribution to the cultural history of violence. Tradition and Innovation - old and new approaches to understanding the relationship between military and society are the cornerstones of the new program. This concept gives the Leitmuseum the Army a unique profile, both in comparison with general historical and other military historical museums.
Since the end of 2011, the new museum presents nearly 20,000 square meters indoor and outdoor area and with a stock of 1.2 million objects, making Dresden's largest museum.
